On March 16, 1978, B. Krawchenko and J. Carter presented a seminar entitled "Profile of Ukrainian Dissidents." B. Krawchenko is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Political Science and a research associate in the Institute. J. Carter is a computer analyst with the Government of Alberta and a graduate student in the Faculty of Education, University of Alberta.
Their seminar reported the findings of a research project which collected data from a variety of samvydav sources on almost one thousand dissidents in the Ukrainian SSR. The data was coded and fed into a computer. The speakers outlined the various steps involved in the project — from research design to code book — and gave some preliminary results of their study.
