Medwidsky, assistant professor in the Department of Slavic Languages, delivered the eighth Institute seminar at the University of Alberta. On February 6, 1979 he spoke on "Fables about Animals."
Dr. Medwidsky discussed some texts of Kazky pro tvaryn , a recently published volume of Ukrainian animal tales. After a brief description of the genre and of the function of oral tradition in general, the speaker compared the total number of texts contained in this recent publication with that of a volume published sixty years earlier by V. Hnatiuk. He found the 1916 edition poorer than its 1976 sequel by 106 animal tales and 37 animal voice texts.
The major part of Dr. Medwidsky ’s presentation was spent comparing texts (where editorial abbreviations had been performed; in the recent edition with their originals. His presentation stimulated a discussion on the subject of editing, bowdlerization and censorship in Soviet Ukrainian publications.
