In 1954, the three-hundredth anniversary of the Pereiaslav Treaty of 1654 between Russia and Ukraine was celebrated with unprecedented fervor throughout the Soviet Union. The event was resurrected ostensibly to justify the position of Ukrainians within the Soviet Union as a “younger brother” of the Russian people. What actually happened at Pereiaslav? Did the Ukrainians accept the tsar as their sovereign? Or was it rather a treaty among equals, soon to be broken by the Russian side? The issues have been obscured by ideology, partial reporting, and the absence of documentation.
This volume includes a historical survey, excerpts from the Cossack chronicles, the conclusions and disputes of leading historians from the seventeenth to the present century, and a careful survey of Soviet historiography, with its changing emphases. The author’s analysis is detached and scholarly. He refuses to be drawn into political debates but instead focuses closely on the problematic issues: the documents controversy, the role of Bohdan Kmelnytsky, Buturlin’s refusal to take an oath guaranteeing traditional Cossack rights, and the status of Ukraine as decreed by the treaty.
Pereiaslav 1654: A Historiographical Study is essential reading not only for scholars of Ukrainian and Russian history, but for all who wish to understand the historical roots of Ukraine’s relations with Russia.
For a fundamental analysis of the Pereiaslav Treaty of 1654 see also Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s History of Ukraine-Rus’. Volume 9, book 2, part 1: The Cossack Age, 1654-1657.

The Sovietization of Ukraine, 1917–1923
This work concerns the Bolsheviks' theory and practice of national self-determination with regard to Ukraine from the outbreak of the revolution in 1917 to the creation of the Soviet Union in 1923. In addition to presenting a detailed account of the events leading to Ukraine's sovietization, the author analyses Marxist theory on the national question, as well as the socio-economic and political situation in Ukraine on the eve of and during the revolution. This book was originally published in Stockholm in 1960 under the title The Russian Communist Party and the Sovietization of Ukraine: A Study in the Communist Doctrine of the Self-Determination of Nations. The second edition has been revised and illustrations have been added.

Christian Social Ethics in Ukraine: The Legacy of Andrei Sheptytsky

In the first half of the twentieth century, Christianity in Europe faced an unprecedented range of social, economic, and political issues that challenged the very essence of the faith. In response to the rise of socialism, the struggle for political self-determination, and the competing totalitarianisms of Soviet communism and German fascism, some of Europe's finest theological minds sought to interpret the social message of the gospel in order to promote a specifically Christian understanding of ideals such as justice, liberty, and democratization. Andrei Sheptytsky (1865–1944), who headed the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Galicia for almost half a century, was not only an outstanding ecclesiastical, cultural, and civic leader, but also a thinker and writer of distinction. Grappling with the social and political problems that beset his religious community, Sheptytsky applied key principles of Christian social ethics to such issues as patriotism, inter-ethnic and church-state relations, the ideal of church unity, Soviet communism, nationalism, religious liberty, ideological atheism, and Nazism. Whether in pastoral letters that probed the Christian life through ethical reflection on social and political reality or in personal representations to such figures as Emperor Franz Joseph, Pope Pius X, Khrushchev, Hitler, and Stalin, Sheptytsky promoted a vision of human life that was grounded in the practical wisdom of both Eastern and Western Christendom. Andrii Krawchuk offers the first comprehensive scholarly study of this complex sphere of Metropolitan Sheptytsky's thought and activity. This pioneering analysis of how Christian moral teaching was applied within an East European context breaks new ground in our understanding of the churches that survived Soviet persecution. With meticulous attention to the facts behind the myth, Krawchuk draws on rigorous research in many sources, including extensive work in the newly opened archives of Ukraine. The result is an engaging interpretation of a legacy that has left its distinctive mark on twentieth-century Christian social thought.

CIUS conference audio (Part 16 of 16)

Outline of presentation:

What structure? (JPH)
Partnerships necessary with Saskatoon and Winnipeg (the Ukrainian centers). Apply for grants in different provinces. We should strike an initiative group. (Jars Balan)
We really need to do a much more thorough review of what has been done. The search can be expanded by volunteer labor. (Frances Swyripa)
It’s a good idea to get started. Start to show what you will do differently. A quick and easy way to start is to start a website for the project. That way info you do have gets immediately posted. Thomas Nahachewsky’s database is a good place to start. Pilot project will need to concentrate on the new stuff – the training, etc. The project has to decide new material and/or new material. (Marusia Petryshyn)
All projects start with an idea. You need a few people – half a dozen at the most. Go slow with an idea. Start in Alberta. Wait for the others. Collect the books. Contact architects, painters. Eventually you also need money. We should contact Teresa, the daughter of Anna Baran. (Peter Savaryn)
Hard thoughts: What you do, you do. The rest is just talk. (Nick Ochotta)
Establish technical committee. (Ostap Skrypnyk)
John Lehr and Ed Ledohowski decided to form a Manitoba Working Group or contact group. Keep everyone aware. Things could be done once we get the technical standards. (Ed Ledohowski)
Have the pilot project also collect existing materials. (Marusia Petryshyn)
A low tech manual of instruction would be worth developing even now. A preliminary form. Something in hard form. The Manitoba people could produce one fairly quickly. (Stella Hryniuk)
What are the legal requirements for putting stuff on web, on databases? Coordinating effort should deal with these issues. (Thomas Nahachewsky)
Worried about the scope of the project. Terms of reference. Parish life? List of priests? We can get excited about social history, etc., but it may be too much. First committee needs to set up the terms of reference. (Ostap Skrypnyk)
What is the technical architecture of the project? This is not a step-by-step project, but something done in parallel. Lets move and things should come together into a master plan. (Bohdan Hrynyshyn)
We will need some official permission/blessing from the consistories to help us, to be partners in reaching the community. (Roman Yereniuk)
Archives and other institutions would probably be happy to give us permissions when we provide money and manpower? (Frances Swyripa) We should offer training not only to students but volunteers. (Brian Cherwick)
Put up links to the websites that we had today, put up the PowerPoint presentations, Frances’ survey, etc. right from today. (Anne-Marie Decore)
In point form:
•Obtain blessings of ecclesiastical authorities
•Formation of initiative group based in Edmonton/CIUS
•Preliminary database of existing materials, projects, archival sources, publications
•Establish website for project, chat room, with blog, links to existing sources
•Apply for U of A grant
•Conduct pilot project
•Develop questionnaire/template for gathering material
•Develop training program for fieldworkers – students and volunteers
•Develop training program for fieldworkers – students and volunteers
•Identify potential partners, repositories
•Establish technical committee – architecture of database
•Establish provincial working groups
•Develop manual for local congregations/groups (low tech handbook)
•Need for legal direction/copyright advice
•Establish terms of reference defining scope of the project, its short-term and long-term objectives
•Need to work on parallel thrusts

Outline found in this PDF

CIUS conference audio (Part 14 of 16)

Outline of presentation:

hard copy (printouts from web)
Interaction of content and digital development – something that needs to be worked out. Various scholarly disciplines (religious studies, history, art history, musicology, folklore, geography, sociology, ethnic studies, anthropology, architecture), tourism, politics. Librarians and curators will be helpful in developing classifications, subject areas, categories. They have experience in this. Definition of categories will be iterative. Inclusion of disciplines has to be thought out. Think about who your users will be and purposes (research, teaching). You will need a searchable database, not just browsable. If a preservation project, how would a museum deal with it? Take into account the experience of the UCHV. See their lists, procedures. As the content becomes clearer, it will require thinking about the digital end. Clarify what users will want, and how can they access the information they want most effectively? Use of “shopping carts.” You have to figure what is in and what is out (film, photos, etc.). Management – not a project so big that it can’t be done. It has to be sculpted, having firm criteria of what is included, what is not. Clarify site objectives, scope. Possible to start with a process website – who’s involved, results of this conference. Perhaps a need for a wiki site.
Financing: federal govt (Canada Heritage Applied Research), Telus New Media Learning Fund, Telus foundation. Because it’s an interprovincial plan it should be eligible for various funding. Multicultural program, no set deadlines. Community Memories program. Gateway Fund. Summer student fund. Heritage Community foundation (managed by Nena Jocic).
Websites that have churches – the Manitoba project is good. CIUS conference audio (Part 12 of 16)

Outline of presentation:

Change of chair because JPH wanted to continue writing up the discussion.
Need to do a survey of what’s already out there. (Ostap Skrypnyk)
Churches were torn down, closed, burned down. Catholic church wants to preserve heritage and identity. But it comes down to priorities. From the church’s point of view, the parish community is what is to be served. Sometimes in these small communities, fixing up the church takes up too much time and energy, limiting their faith time. The church is worried about the salvation of the community. The building should be for the community, not the other way around. Sometimes only 5 people at a service, sometimes only 1. The Church would like to have a foundation that would have a lot of money and preserve all the churches, but there is no such thing now. It is also important to preserve the heritage. The minutes of meetings and bills would provide valuable information (minute books and financial records). Clergy are an important source. They go out there, perform services, visit the cemeteries. Metropolitan Lawrence also has many photos and videos of his visits – parishioners give him copies. Now he is being given DVDs of services. Old liturgical services are important. Brazil has a similar experience, though much harder. Brazilians have different carols. Different variants of music. Comparative angles. (Metropolitan Lawrence)
Putting too much info on the web could raise security issues. (Oksana) We could restrict access. (Bohdan Hrynyshyn)
Need to collect contact information. Not easy at all. In some cases the only person who is in anyway responsible might be the German farmer next door who cuts the grass. Contacts are aging – he reads the obituaries to see if the guys who opened the churches haven’t passed away. (Jars Balan)
We tried to record everything in full complexity. It’s too much even for students. We have to work on two levels – a research/archival tier which needs a full database and a public level that has been processed by scholars. (Natalka Kononenko)
From Regina. Has a bit of a plan of his own and is looking to merge projects. His project coming from the (Ukrainian Orthodox) church out rather than from scholars. Already when he first began to be interested in these things, he saw ten-inch trees on cemeteries. He would like more technical help, advice about proper documentation. It would be good to be part of a larger, directed project. Not just students but retired professional people. Importance of volunteers. How do we coordinate? avoid duplication? There needs to be some kind of coordinating body laying out a plan of action. Needed: determining the tools, assisting in training. (Yaroslav Lozowchuk)
She remembers how the community was split over saving the Portage la Prairie church. Diocese should help with conflict resolution. The best contacts, in her experience, are old women. Excellent materials in Ukraine – archives of Sheptytsky. Archives of Sister Servants also in Ukraine. (Stella Hryniuk)
This is a project in lieu of preservation. But many conversations go back to physical preservation. Visual? or also archival? documentation? thorough? or documentation restricted to visual culture. (Frances Swyripa)
We need a committee with a representative from each area. Digital storage is a very difficult issue right now. Shortages of digital storage at the U of A. Not just buying, but upkeep, back up. (Natalka Kononenko)
We should restrict ourselves to digital, not materials. We can go beyond the university for cheap storage. (Bohdan Hrynyshyn)
Need to go through church boards. 6-7 of these generally run with one clergyman so you can have a meeting with reps and the clergyman. Have one team going in, or risk more distrust. (Sylvia Chinery)
Her experience – people demanded to be included in the project (historic buildings in 1970s project). (Frances Swyripa)
Every medium will have issues. You have to plan resources for update and maintenance of data. Otherwise you will lose things one way or another. Need to plan for that. Looking for a repository for his work.
Faith vs. heritage. Funding – can we get the same today? Manageability, duplication. (Frances Swyripa)
Modeling a project the way we did made it possible to include volunteers. This is a project with time running out. People are dying, losing their memories. Maybe there’s a 10-year window to do this. (Stella Hryniuk)
The students had a guidebook on how to take the photographs, in what order. They had also black velvet for photographing objects. (Roman Yereniuk)
Set up a field school in connection with the Folklore Center to work on this project. They would get training in field methodology. (Natalka Kononenko)
Maybe this could be done in conjunction with History and Classics. (Frances Swyripa) Or HUCO or Library. (Natalka Kononenko)
Oral history at this stage is risky. Memories are jumbled. Parish archives are lost or sitting molding in someone’s basement. Chasing congregational records is not easy. There is little info on material history in church archives. Ukrainian newspapers are useful in this regard, esp. in early years – correspondences about churches. Artistic photography and paintings important, but also documentary archival photography. (Jars Balan)
Aerial photos – the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village has some, that are relevant to their own buildings. Provincial govt has internships through Athabasca U, U of Calgary. (Stefan Sokolowski)
Ukrainian Village has three churches. They have very detailed reports about them (materials, etc.). Bobersky photographs in Oseredok, Winnipeg. Thinks Ukrainian halls should also be included. Some cemeteries are not related to churches. Not only the prairies but Ontario. Film on Saskatchewan grave maker on YouTube. (Peter Melnycky)
We should restrict to religious objects. (Frances Swyripa)
Bobersky photos are bizarrely coded and hardly described. U of A did some itinerary of the collection, but it’s not a very usable collection. She is now visiting churches in Alberta and is impressed by some of the archival improvement introduced by Metropolitan Lawrence. The context is very important – the spirituality. There is a large Lipinsky collection looking for a home. (Gloria Romaniuk)
UCAMA has black-and-white photos taken by Mr. Jopyk in the 1970s, also paintings by Pani Iwanets (already digitally photographed). Are digital methods safe for preservation? (Michelle Tracey)
Since we will be working with young people, students, we have to be aware of distinctions between faith, theology, spirituality. The latter – the personal connection – will interest and motivate students the most today. This was not addressed in their project, although they did have people interested in the institutional church, theology, belief. All of these aspects have to be addressed. More than “religion.” Sometimes there are halls where churches used to be. Winnipeg Tribune photos and descriptions are in U of M archives – valuable stuff there. (Stella Hryniuk)
Lots in the consistory archives of the Orthodox church in Winnipeg. Perhaps a proper archive could result from this project. (Sandy Sawchuk) UCAMA is trying to build a safe environment and would be a proper archive in the future. (Michelle Tracey)
The Russo-Orthodox are warm, but they will be suspicious. Who is asking? What will it be used for? She herself is connected with this church. She knows that people are not aware of the value of what they have. The project would be a learning experience for people. She has church archives in her own home! (Sylvia Chinery)
How should we go about making contact with the rural communities? (Frances Swyripa)
Even if we just identify what has been done, it will be a great thing. We must also identify who can help us with this project. We also have to identify the sources of funds. Alberta govt promises money for cultural projects – get them while they’re being offered. (Peter Savaryn)
Perhaps compile a list of methodologies to develop a template. Cooperation between projects in Manitoba was important – this project should do the same. And avoid duplication. Don’t redo Ed’s project where Ed’s doing it. Devolution important to management. (Brian Cherwick)
Should we put everything on line? (Frances Swyripa)
The community will like digital resources, genealogy people, historical background of family. If it’s digitized, it’s available all over. CIUS conference audio (Part 8 of 16)

Outline of presentation:

Stella Hryniuk
prepared text exists
How the book they wrote, Monuments of Faith, developed. In the 1980s there was not only the problem of abandonment, but also vandalism, security, disrepair. For Stella, the destruction by fire of her grandfather’s church was a real wake-up call. The three authors received a large grant from Manitoba to do the book (roughly 10,000 CAD in 1987). The government was interested in funding a project, but not through a faith-based group. The authors hired students and worked on the project for three years. There was a training process. Students usually stayed through two summers. They were passionate. About 2/3 of them are still involved in Ukrainian and Ukrainian Canadian historical projects of some sort to this day. (The students are now already 20 years older.) They identified 140 Ukrainian churches and 20 other East European churches. In the end they did full documentation of 40 churches. Slides of exterior, interior, objects, cemeteries; inventory forms; oral histories; popular histories and brochures; architectural plans (floor plans, elevations). Also, on the side, maps of the areas. Identified all the Winnipeg churches, but most of their churches were rural. They had to rely on local assistance to put up students, etc. Regular reports, updates, communication with govt.
Roman Yereniuk
slide presentation (analog slides from 1989)
We got separate funds for students [like STEP]. They did a second phase in 1993. There are about 40 inches of filing. 5000 slides. They had a system of how to do slides. Over 200 slides per church. They called themselves the Manitoba East European Heritage Society so that they could include Russo-Orthodox, etc. They have assisted parishes with their own parish histories later on. There was a need to break the ice originally in the communities. Did a slide presentation to the parish first to show the kind of work they do. They actually saved a church, the Church of the Resurrection in Dauphin. They recorded plashchanytsi, church books [some have marginal inscriptions], embroideries, church basements.
The slides have been well preserved, using the technology then available.

Outline found in this PDF

CIUS conference audio (Part 4 of 16)

Outline of presentation:

This is a political action by the Canadian Ukrainian community. Multicultural policy has faded. But an important part of our heritage were Ukrainian bloc settlements, Ukrainian areas of cities. The Ukrainian districts of cities are being dissolved. The monuments are markers that we existed and were a presence in Western Canada. These markers resist our erasure as a community. Help give us a sense of ourselves as unique and special, self-recognition.
It is getting harder and harder to justify the Ukrainian “group” to Ukrainian Canada. This project helps our recognition by others.
The distinctive Ukrainian churches on the prairies are attractive. People stop their cars to look at and investigate them. Consider that the French Canadians have a geographical place. Ukrainians need to have place too.
Also valuable as centers of religious, spiritual development. They have a power. We have to remember why these buildings were built in the first place.
Ukrainian Canadian Congress has not been a leader in heritage preservation, but it is interested in it. The heritage is endangered. People are throwing things out, valuable things, as they clean up.
Also there are all sorts of auxiliary activities and benefits that can come out of this project. This is a huge project.

Transcription found in this PDF

CIUS lecture audio.

Co-organized by CIUS and the Ukrainian Professional and Business Club of Edmonton, the forty-seventh Shevchenko lecture at the University of Alberta was given by Kateryna Levchenko, who spoke on “Indifference to the Violation of Women’s Rights in Ukraine as a Social Problem” (21 March 2013). Dr. Levchenko is widely recognized as a strong advocate of women’s rights in Ukraine and is also known internationally for her work on the crime of trafficking in human beings, especially women and children.

Dr. Levchenko emphasized that an important aspect of modernization is the guarantee of effective civil, political, and economic rights for women. According to analysts at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukraine currently ranks sixty-third among seventy-five countries in the so-called global gender gap. Women’s rights in Ukraine are violated in a variety of ways. Salaries for men doing work of the same value as women remain 25 per cent higher. In the political sphere, women’s representation in the higher tiers of power remains low. Domestic violence in Ukraine continues to grow at an alarming rate.

Dr. Levchenko concluded with the substantial gains that have been made in Ukraine over the last few years with regard to women’s rights. These include the formation of an Expert Council, of which Dr. Levchenko is a member. Established in 2009, it considers appeals regarding discrimination and prepares recommendations for the Ministry of Social Policy to counteract detected violations. La Strada-Ukraine has initiated the documentation of gender discrimination in educational, cultural, and media spheres and partnered with NGOs and specialists in the Ministry of Social Policy to monitor special agencies and institutions that assist victims of family violence. The process of women’s emancipation has also inspired well-known Ukrainian celebrities, from sports figures to movie stars, Kateryna Levchenko to participate in campaigns against domestic violence and sexual exploitation.

Found in CIUS Newsletter 2013

CIUS Shevchenko Annual Lecture audio.

Co-organized by CIUS and the Ukrainian Professional and Business Club of Edmonton, the forty- sixth Shevchenko lecture at the University of Alberta was given by James Sherr, a senior fellow of the Russia and Eurasia Programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (London), who spoke on “Ukraine and the Russian Question” (9 March 2012).

Mr. Sherr analyzed the Russian factor in the current Ukrainian historical and political situation. Speaking about the legacy of Kyivan Rus' which Russians claim as the wellspring of the imperial tradition constructed by their eighteenth-century tsars, he noted that while some specifics of the Russo- Ukrainian relationship may have changed with Ukraine’s declaration of independence in 1991, its fundamental nature has not. He referred in particular to the complex issue of identity, which has been at the core of recurring tensions between the two nations. Citing Vladimir Putins recent article on the national question in Russia, Sherr noted its concept of a common Russian civilization with the Russian nation as its constituent core. This notion has invariably served to justify imperial expansion into neighbouring regions.

Mr. Sherr argued that there have been no significant changes in Russia’s attitude toward Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Recovering from what Putin called the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the twentieth century,” today’s Russian leadership seeks to restore Moscow’s former “sphere of influence” and recapture the proud past of the Russian imperial state. The recent war with Georgia, the territorial provocations at Tuzla, the use of energy as a political tool, and attempts to thwart Ukraine’s European aspirations are all indications of Russia’s real intentions with regard to Ukraine. Russia certainly feels threatened because of its loss of superpower status, said Mr. Sherr, but it is concerned above all to maintain its imperial legacy and identity, not least by developing an increasingly authoritarian political culture. Putin’s anti-Western attitude and traditional Soviet-era beliefs strike a responsive chord with many Russians, which allows him to advance his current political agenda while Europe and other Western countries are preoccupied with their own economic and political problems.

Mr. Sherr argued that it is in the best interest of the Euro-Atlantic democracies to preserve an independent Ukraine and promote the development of its civil society and cultural institutions. He emphasized that Ukraine’s sovereignty must be respected in accordance with international law. A democratic and European Ukraine would thus serve as a model to democratize Russia, which will otherwise remain a source of authoritarianism in the region.

Mr. Sherr concluded that the greatest threat to Ukraine is Ukraine itself. Despite ongoing attempts by the West to encourage political and economic reforms, Ukraine has largely squandered these opportunities. It failed to act on its proclaimed European aspirations, entailing a market economy and political democracy, and remained mired in post-Soviet inertia, a non-transparent business culture, and a drift toward authoritarianism.

Between 1995 and May 2008, James Sherr was a fellow of the former Conflict Studies Research Centre of the Defence Academy of the UK and is a member of the Social Studies Faculty of Oxford University. He has been a long-standing adviser to governments in the UK and the EU and to NATO, and advised Ukraine for many years on defence/security sector reform and related issues. His publications include Russia and the West A Reassessment (2008) and The Mortgaging of Ukraine’s Independence (2010).

Found in CIUS Newsletter 2012

Interview with Exchange Students from Ukraine: Vira Holiyan and Ihor Kotsiuba

CIUS interview audio.

The student exchange program between the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Lviv University) and the University of Alberta (U of A) has completed its sixth year. In the 2011-12 academic year, two exchange students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lviv, Vira Holiyan and Ihor Kotsiuba, studied at the U of A.

Both Ukrainian students noted the importance of the well-structured curriculum at the U of A, course options, private rather than public announcement of grades, the greater openness of Canadian professors, and active student participation in class. They emphasized that courses they attended at the U of A tended to be more oriented toward practice than those in Ukraine. The Ukrainian students liked the U of A campus, where all facilities are in one place. In Lviv, by contrast, university buildings are scattered across the city. U of A libraries were also convenient to use and usually had the required books available.

Both students stressed that they had little difficulty in working in English upon embarking on their studies here, partly because much of their language use centred on mathematical terminology, which is universal. In some cases exchange students from Ukraine had to devote several weeks to adjusting to the daily use of English upon their arrival in Canada. In everyday life, Ihor and Vira noted the comfort and convenience of Edmonton. They were impressed by Canadian hospitality and attracted by informal student culture, as manifested in casual clothing and eating habits.

U of A students Stephan Pacholok (Faculty of Science) and Dominika Lirette (Faculty of Arts) were recipients of the Ivan Franko School of Ukrainian Studies Ukraine Travel Award at CIUS. The two attended the summer course “Ukrainian through Its Living Culture” offered annually in Lviv for the past eleven years by the Ukrainian Culture, Language and Literature Program in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the U of A. They found studying in Lviv an unforgettable experience that allowed them to improve their ancestral language through immersion in an authentic Ukrainian-speaking environment and everyday experience. They attended regular classes taught by Dr. Alla Nedashkivska, walked around the city, attended plays and concerts, and went to cafes and restaurants. The students were charmed by the rich cultural life of Lviv and its historical sites. There were also very emotional moments when participants met their families, and Lviv was an excellent base from which to travel the country.

On 30 November 2011, all four students participated in the third seminar in the series “Ukraine and Canada as Witnessed by Students,” which is organized to bring attention to the student exchange program between the U of A and Lviv University and other opportunities to study in Ukraine. The event was co-organized with the Alberta Society for the Advancement of Ukrainian Studies and the Ukrainian Students’ Society. The establishment of the new University of Alberta Ukraine Student Exchange Endowment Fund was announced at the seminar. CIUS regards the growth of the new fund as one of its priorities and encourages the community to expand the fund. The short-term goal is to increase its capital to $30,000 to fund one annual scholarship of $1,000. The long-term goal is to reach $100,000, which could provide two annual scholarships of about $1,800 each. Currently, this amount would suffice to cover the cost of travel between Ukraine and Edmonton.

Found in CIUS Newsletter 2012

Interview with Exchange Students from Ukraine: Yuriy Kyrylych and Dmytro Hural
Interview
CIUS interview audio.

Bohdan Klid interviews exchange students Yuriy Kyrylych and Dmytro Hural. The student exchange program between the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Lviv University) and the University of Alberta (U of A) entered its fourth year in the fall of 2009. In the 2009-10 academic year, two exchange students from Lviv University, Yuriy Kyrylych and Dmytro Hural, studied at the U of A. No exchange students from the U of A studied at Lviv University this academic year.

Yuriy Kyrylych is a fifth-year student at Lviv University’s Faculty of International Relations, where he is completing a master’s degree in international finance. Yuriy attended the U of A in the fall 2009 semester, taking three courses in the Faculty of Business: Decision Analysis, Advanced Corporate Finance, and Investments.

The second student, Dmytro Hural, completed his master’s degree in commercial law at the Lviv University Law Faculty in 2009, after which he began working in a Lviv law firm. In the fall 2009 semester Dmytro took courses in International Business Transactions, Public International Law, and Contracts. In the winter 2010 semester he took courses in International Criminal Law, Intellectual Property, and Corporate Securities.

Dmytro and Yuriy explained that the comparative experience of taking courses at the U ofA gave them special insights, and that other exchange students from Ukraine could expect similar benefits. The two students agreed that the major prerequisites for students from Lviv University to succeed at the U ofA are good study habits, a sound knowledge of English, and the ability to master specific course terminology in a very short period of time.

On 29 November 2009 they gave a joint presentation at the Plast building on “The Legal and Economic Situation in Ukraine: Challenges and Perspectives,” sponsored by the Alberta Society for the Advancement of Ukrainian Studies. Yuriy Kyrylych focused on impediments to economic growth in Ukraine, while Dmytro Hural spoke largely about reforms needed to transform the legal system into one that is more predictable and equitable.

After four years of the exchange program’s existence, seven students from Lviv and four from Edmonton have studied at the partner institutions. Students from Ukraine have generally commented positively on the professor-student relationship at the U of A and on the opportunity to take courses not available at home or featuring somewhat different content from those offered at Lviv University. U of A students have stressed Lviv’s rich cultural life, the city’s architectural gems, and the improvement in Ukrainian that their stays brought.

Challenges to the long-term viability of the exchange are the higher costs and the relatively large amount of time needed to study abroad—at least one semester. Higher costs include air fare and room and board, which are particularly onerous for Ukrainian students.

Found in CIUS Newsletter 2010
