Description
An account of the resource
The publication of the proceedings of the first Council of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, which was held in Kyiv in October 1921, contains the previously unpublished proceedings of the ecclesiastical council that laid the foundations for the independence (autocephaly) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church from the Moscow Patriarchate. The documents were discovered in the Kyiv archives after Ukraine became independent in 1991. They have now been published by the Church Studies Program in cooperation with the Mykhailo Hrushevsky Institute of Ukrainian Archeography and Source Studies and the Central State Archives of the Supreme Government Institutions of Ukraine. They are of crucial importance for the study of the history of the Ukrainian Church in general, and of the Ukrainian Orthodox church in particular. The publication of the volume was made possible by the generous support of the Publications Fund of the Ukrainian Theological Faculty at St. Andrew's College in Winnipeg, St. John's Fraternal Society of Edmonton, the Edmonton Branch of the Ukrainian Self-Reliance Association and the Stephania Bukachevsky-Pastushenko Archival Fund at CIUS.

An account of the resource

The Religion and Culture program was founded in 1994 as the Ukrainian Church Studies Program.

It is devoted to the study of all aspects of the religious experience of Ukrainians in Ukraine and in the Ukrainian diaspora (especially in Canada), from the history and politics of religion to sacral art, architecture, and music.

The initiator and first director of the Religion and Culture program was Dr. Serhii Plokhy, now Mykhailo Hrushevsky Professor of History at Harvard University. Under his successor, Dr. John-Paul Himka, the program focused on Ukrainian sacral art, architecture, and music. In particular, he launched Sanctuary: The Spiritual Heritage Documentation Project. This is a project to preserve a visual and oral history record of the Ukrainian churches and other sacral monuments of the three prairie provinces, as well as to digitize recordings of their liturgical music.

It continues to be sponsored by the Religion and Culture program. An account of the resource

The special issue Tentorium honorum (volumes 33-34, 2008-2009) is a collection of thirty-three essays written by North American and European colleagues and former students in honor of Frank E. Sysyn, the distinguished specialist in Ukrainian, Polish, and East European history and a major figure in the development of Ukrainian historical studies in the United States, Canada, Ukraine, and Germany for more than three decades. The essays, which range from medieval to contemporary East European and Ukrainian history, reflect the breadth and impact of his scholarship. Tentorium honorum includes a biographical essay about Professor Sysyn and a select bibliography of his works. The title was adopted from a seventeenth-century panegyric to Adam Kysil, the Ukrainian leader and Polish statesman who was the subject of Professor Sysyn's groundbreaking monograph on early-modern Ukraine and Poland-Lithuania.
