RR No. 01. FILM AND THE UKRAINIANS IN CANADA. 1921–1980

The 110 items in this filmography cover almost six decades of cinematic production, from 1921 to 1980. This filmography will no doubt be of greatest interest to historians of the cinema, for it provides insights into a significant but poorly documented aspect of film making in Canada.

RR No. 18. CHERNOBYL AND ITS AFTERMATH: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY
This selected bibliography lists periodical articles, monographs, monographs in languages other than English or French, and reports and hearings. Over 160 items in total. "Chernobyl is a disaster that has become depersonalized. We have lost the human element. Instead, we read of statistics, of the radioactive fallout into rivers, lakes and on the land. Western and Soviet scientists are comparing notes and exchanging technical information for the future. I was even asked in Toronto recently whether more lives would not be saved through the knowledge gained from the study of Chornobyl's irradiated families than were lost during the disaster itself...." - excerpt from the Foreword by David Marples.

RR No. 19. UKRAINIAN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH: BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS, 1890–1965
CIUS Research Report No. 19, Ukrainian Literature in English: Books and Pamphlets, 1890–1965, compiled and edited by Marta Tarnawsky, is the first CIUS Press publication of Ms. Tarnawsky's major continuing bibliographic project which attempts, for the first time, a comprehensive coverage of translations from and materials about Ukrainian literature published in English from the earliest known publications to the present. The focus of the Ukrainian Literature in English project is on modern Ukrainian literature, i.e., literature written originally in the Ukrainian language and published since 1798. The detailed annotated bibliographies produced by Ms. Tarnawsky cover the following types of English-language materials: (a) books and pamphlets, both translations and literary studies; (b) articles in journals, encyclopedias, symposia, and other collections; (c) translations of prose, poetry, and drama in journals and anthologies; and (d) book reviews in journals and collections. Extensive general indexes make these bibliographies easy to use and reader-friendly.

This research report is the definitive bibliography of Volodymyr Vynnychenko's works and publications. Fully indexed and annotated, the report is bound quality library binding. Vynnychenko was not only a writer, but a statesman and politician. His first story 'Krasa i syla' (Beauty and Strength), 1902), created a sensation and brought him almost immediate recognition. In his lifetime, he wrote some 20 plays and 11 novels, and throughout his life Vynnychenko kept a detailed diary. They provide some insight into his artistic, personal and political life. Of historical interest is Vynnychenko's three-volume memoir of the struggle for Ukraine's independence, Vidrodzhennia natsii (Rebirth of a Nation, 1920). In political life, Vynnychenko was leader of the Ukrainian Social Democratic Workers' party and was chosen as one of two vice-presidents of the Central Rada and then the first president of the General Secretariat, the autonomous government of Ukraine.

RR No. 35. THE SOVIET FAMINE 1932–33
The Soviet famine of 1932–33 is an event in human history which is still little understood. While there is a consensus among Western scholars that such an event took place, the causes, geographical extent, and the severity in terms of excess mortality are today still being extensively debated. One reason for the debate stems from the lack of hard demographic and economic evidence that would conclusively define the event, particularly from the Soviet Union before 1987. To fully appreciate the content and significance of of the Cairns' reports, they must be placed within an historical context. The task is to broadly outline what took place in the Soviet countryside over fifty years ago. To accomplish this, the following topics are addressed: collectivization of Soviet agriculture; Soviet agriculture during the First Five-Year Plan 1928–32, and the famine of the 1932–33.

RR No. 37. English-Ukrainian Computer Glossary and Short Glossary of Audio-Visual Technology
The computer age has posed another challenge for the Ukrainian language to keep pace with developments in science and technology. Those who speak Ukrainian must be able to coin new terms or effectively assimilate foreign ones to keep the language up to date. This research paper was published to help foster a better Ukrainian technical vocabulary and to develop the same power as the literary language. The glossary may be used for for experts who wish to compile an authoritative and preferably computerized lexicon of Ukrainian computer terms.

RR No. 45. З «НОВОГО КРАЮ»: ЛИСТИ УКРАЇНСЬКИХ ЕМІГРАНТІВ З КАНАДИ
This report includes the most typical, by their content, letters of Ukrainian immigrants from Bukovyna and Galicia, written from Canada in the years of 1897–1932. The letters are presented with few editorial corrections, abbreviations, or changes in style. The original orthography is intentionally preserved so that the reader can feel the personality of the author behind the lines of each letter. Among the various documents which help us study the phenomenon of immigration, letters of are perhaps the most authentic, reliable, and the richest in their contents compared to all other primary sources.

RR No. 48. ЗАХІДНЯ УКРАЇНА: МАТЕРІЯЛИ ДО БІБЛІОГРАФІЇ
The compiler of this work and the work itself are little know even among professional Ukrainianists. The works sets itself the purely practical task of covering the literature that appeared between 1917 and 1929 in Soviet Ukraine and dealt with Ukrainian culture outside the borders of the Ukrainian republic. The bibliography falls naturally into four major chapters: 1. Ukrainians living under Polish rule; 2. Ukrainians in Romanian Bukovyna; 3. Ukrainians in Czechoslovakia; and finally, 4. Ukrainians outside Europe, including the sizable immigration in America. Chapters are further divided by subjects and arranged alphabetically within these divisions. The bibliography includes a wide range of articles published in the rich Ukrainian serial literature of that time. While each entry is laconic, the work is enhanced by an author/title index.

RR No. 50. УКРАЇНСЬКА ДРУКОВАНА КНИГА XVI–XVIII вв. УКРАЇНСЬКА ПРЕСА (1816–1923)
The work reprinted here is Maslov's synthesis of almost a quarter century of work with, and reflection on, Ukrainian book culture of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. In less than seventy pages, he gives us an overview of the major printing houses, the art of the book, and the some of the silent characteristics of the typeface and language of the old Ukrainian book, as well as the book trade, libraries and curators. The second work reprinted herein is far less well-known, and may represent the only narrative scholarly work by Varfolomii Ihnatiienko (1892–1943). We know little of Ihnatiienko personally. His only other major contribution aside from articles is a work of enumerative bibliography (Bibliohrafiia ukrains'koi presy 1815–1916 [Kyiv, 1930]) dealing with the history of the periodical press in Ukraine, published (1930) as volume IV in the Trudy of UNIK. His study of periodical press in Ukraine, however, retains its value in our own time, for it deals with a reasonably objective manner with all the journalistic currents in nineteenth-century Ukraine-currents which have been ignored or suppressed in more recent Soviet studies. Taken together, these two works make a contribution to documenting some of the solid achievements of bibliographical and book studies scholarship in Ukraine during the period of its efflorescence.

RR No. 65. UKRAINIAN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH, 1966–1979
The CIUS Research Report No. 65, Ukrainian Literature in English, 1966–1979: An Annotated Bibliography (527 pp.), compiled and edited by Marta Tarnawsky, is the fourth CIUS Press publication of Ms.

RR No. 06. Sources for Researching Ukrainian Family History
This research report of journals, periodicals, and newspapers includes Ukrainian, German, Polish, and Russian titles and sources. "Names are often a clue to family origins, since they sometimes impart information on the profession or ethnic origin or some other feature of one's ancestors. Most Ukrainian surnames were fixed in the late eigteenth or early nineteenth centuries..... the ending -enko is predominant in central or eastern Ukraine, and -uk or -chuk is predominant in Western Ukraine." (from page 9).
